This page explains the rules system as the game presents it. It stays spoiler-light about the story behind the rules, but it does describe what kind of danger exists at night.

Why Kagatsu has rules

Kagatsu follows deity-established rules, and townspeople pay monthly contributions for protection. The village looks cozy by day — crops, festivals, errands — but the rules are load-bearing. The game’s own marketing boils them down to three: don’t talk to strangers, don’t leave the village, and whatever you do, don’t go out at night.

The rules we can verify

  • Don’t talk to strangers.
  • Don’t pry into others’ business or reveal secrets.
  • Every good deed is rewarded.
  • Observe the curfew — no going out past 11 p.m.

What the rules protect you from

  • Nights belong to yokai — each with its own counter or mitigation, and the game offers no hand-holding.
  • Seasonal yokai gates trade items for crop-boosting scarecrows; random night events (like the candle-selling yokai) hide story fragments.
  • Later-season spirits are genuinely frightening — gathering runs can become scrambles to get home.

What happens if you break them

The horror in Village in the Shade is built on consequence, not jump scares alone. Stay out past curfew and the village stops being safe: yokai actively hunt you, and experimenting to find each one’s weakness is part of the design. One honest caveat from reviewers: the story eventually forces a curfew break on you rather than leaving the choice in your hands — a deliberate narrative decision worth knowing before you get attached to perfect behavior.

Every good deed being rewarded cuts the other way, too: helping villagers, honoring the rules, and participating in festivals all feed the social systems that keep Kagatsu pleasant.

Sunshine Mode: the no-horror option

If the nights are too much, Sunshine Mode (added through official updates) removes the scary elements, cuts night scenes, and softens the opening while keeping the story. In Sunshine Mode, new support character Nago moves in and the update prerequisites for some events differ from standard Shade mode. You get the farming loop and characters without the dread.

Shade mode is the intended experience and the one reviewers scored. Sunshine mode is a legitimate accessibility option, not a lesser demo — pick it freely if horror is a dealbreaker. See our platforms overview for where to buy either way.
